The history of Stemilt Growers dates back nearly a century ago, when the Mathison family homesteaded 160 acres on Stemilt Hill overlooking the Columbia River in Washington state. The high-elevation microclimates offered superior growing conditions and the family began specializing in tree fruits such as apples, cherries and pears. Through five generations, the Mathison's have maintained their family owned farms, cultivating the orchards and expanding to include packaging plants, storage facilities, orchard operations and marketing partnerships.

In 1989, Stemilt Growers launched its Responsible Choice program which focuses on the practice of sustainable agriculture. In addition to dedicating over 2,000 acres to organic farming - making the company one of the largest organic growers in the state of Washington - Stemilt incorporates methods to conserve water and prevent soil erosion. Today, through both recycling and composting, the company prevents over 160 truckloads of waste from going into landfills each year.
