Burch Farms

Thomas Lewis, Jimmy Burch and Jimmy Burch, Jr.

Burch Brothers Jimmy, Bill and Ted, along with Jimmy's wife Theresa and son Jimmy Jr. are proud owners of Burch Farms. Farming is part of the Burch family history. Their family has farmed for generations since the 1800's. In 1950, Jimmy, Bill and Ted's parents set up Burch Farm on 35 acres in Faison, North Carolina. The farm has since grown to 2,500 acres.

Jimmy is proud to be part of a family owned business. We "take pride in our lifetime accomplishment." He hopes one day, the family's next generation will take over the farm and continue its growth.

Burch Farms turned from conventional farming to organic farming based on huge customer demand. This was no easy task as it takes three years to become certified organic, using no chemical pesticides or fertilizers since that day forward. Now certified organic by the North Carolina Crop Improvement Association, Burch Farms is proud to grow sweet potatoes and butternut squash for Earth's Best.

To maintain their high crop yield without chemical fertilizers, the Burch family relies on crop rotation, continually changing the location on the farm that each vegetable is grown. In addition to sweet potatoes and squash, Burch Farms grows collard greens, cabbage and spinach.

The Burch's take great care in the vegetables they grow, only harvesting them at their peak of flavor. There is generally 120 days from planting to harvest waiting for the sweet potatoes grow to just the right size (more than two inches) and the squash turns just the right shade of tan.

"We feel good feeding babies the most nutritious vegetables grown in the world," Jimmy said, referring to the Beauregard and Hernandez sweet potatoes Burch Farms produces for Earth's Best. Not only are they organic, they are high in Vitamins A and C and a good source of fiber. According to the USDA, Sweet Potatoes are one of the highest ranking produce on the nutrition scale. "We look forward to feeding generations to come."
