Studies indicate that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid), long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids found in breast milk, may have positive impacts on babies’ brain and eye development. For this reason most formulas sold in the U.S. today contain DHA and ARA, although it is not required.
